Norway approves genetically modified rapeseed oil for salmon farming

On February 15th, 2024, Norwegian Food Safety Bureau approved the use of rapeseed oil from transgenic rapeseed NS-B50027-4 in salmon feed, which can increase the omega-3 fatty acid content of salmon, improve the color of fish and reduce black spots. This is another approval after Norway first approved the use of transgenic rapeseed oil in fish feed in 2023. Developed by Newhide Seed Industry Co., Ltd., the rape has the characteristics of producing omega-3 fatty acids and glufosinate tolerance. It was approved for commercial cultivation in the United States and Australia in 2018, and was approved for food and feed in Australia, Canada and the United States from 2018 to 2022, and was approved for food in New Zealand. Omega-3 fatty acids for human consumption are mainly from fish oil, which is expected to become a sustainable substitute for traditional fish oil, alleviating the problems of decreasing wild fish population and high price of fish oil.
